THE HIGH MOUNTAIN INHABITANTS

SIERRA DE HIJAR – MACIZO DEL CURAVACAS

Palentina Mountain Natural Park

This is where the Cantabrian Mountains reach the highest altitudes, with mountains that surpass 2,500 m.

This is where two of the biogeographical zones come together, of the three that the Iberian Peninsula has, the Mediterranean and the Eurosiberian.

Here is the only western European mountain range, which runs east-west and close to a coastal platform, such as the Cantabrian Sea.

Undoubtedly one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in Europe, from the zones of paramos, to the alpine areas, everything is very changeable in a very short space.

But let’s focus on the mountain, a place of great interest in flora, fauna and geology. As for the flora, it is worth mentioning the alpine with several endemisms, Spergula viscosa, Primula pedemontana, Spanish Draba, and a very changing botanical plant as it ascends in height.
