SCAVENGERS – POKER OF VULTURES
Cádiz has one of the largest populations of Griffon Vultures in Spain. The hills and cliffs of Cádiz hold more than 2,000 pairs of nesting vultures and during migratory periods these numbers swell, increased by concentrations in the south of the province by thousands of these individuals as they wait for the right moment to cross the Strait during their annual migration.
In the same way, the mountains of Cádiz have several nesting pairs of the smallest of our scavengers, the Egyptian Vulture. Due to its critical endangered conservations status and its small population number in Andalusia, an opportunity to observe this stunning bird is always exciting for bird lovers.
During the winter, dispersal juveniles of Black Vultures wander over the province of Cádiz. Some of them will try to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to reach the African continent and some of them will stay to spend the winter in southern Spain.
Finally, the highly-sought-after Ruppell’s Vulture. This species, native to sub-Saharan Africa and critically endangered, is an exclusive speciality to various bird watching sites in Tarifa (Strait of Gibraltar) during summer and fall.
