JOURNEY TO THE PAST OF OUR LAND, SENDA BOQUERON DEL ESTENA

We immerse ourselves in the hand of expert guides in a pleasant walk through one of the routes of the National Park of Cabañeros with more Geological Heritage and biodiversity, “El Boquerón del Estena” (Geological Interest Site: Cambrian and Ordovician of the PN, and Natural Reserve Fluvial of the Estena river in all its passage through the Park), in the municipality of Navas de Estena.

A journey back in time of more than 400 million years, a journey that fascinates by its fabulous rocky outcrops that keep fossilized footprints of the marine past of the Iberian Peninsula, such as a giant worm gallery, sand anemone anchors, crucians trilobites, wave ripples …

All its beautiful landscapes are of great botanical value, with Mediterranean forest, riparian forest and relics of Atlantic vegetation such as yew and birch, and accompanying this natural wealth a very diverse and abundant associated fauna: birds, amphibians, butterflies, reptiles, ungulates, small carnivorous mammals, etc.

El Estena, a wild river that has dug a deep valley to break through mountains. A river full of life, sheltering in its crystalline waters a variety of aquatic animals, such as the small Jarabugo, a native fish, and a wonderful biodiversity associated with wet enclaves where we can run into an otter. Flying over this hidden and secluded landscape, the Black Vultures that in Cabañeros find the ideal place for nesting and breeding making it one of the most important points in the world.

Did you know… ?

The name of the route consists of the word Boquerón, which means “mouth or large opening”, and Estena, which is the proper name of the river. It is therefore a fluvial gorge, a narrowing that has been excavated by the Estena River in its union with a tributary stream, the Chorrillo.
