EURASIAN TREE SPARROW, THE SMALLER AND DELICATE SPARROW OF THE PENINSULAR WILDLIFE

In the Iberian Peninsula there are up to five species: the alpine sparrow, which breeds in high mountains; the Moorish sparrow, who does it in Extremadura and Andalusia; the gaudy sparrow, more sparse and inhabitant of forest and rocky environments; the common one, tied to the cities, and the miller, present in rural nuclei, the one of more of pueblo.El most frequent is the common sparrow and that lives accompanying us in the cities. Sparrows suffer a worrying generalized retreat, and 63% of this bird in Europe has disappeared. This decline is due to causes such as climate change, pollution, the lack of green spaces, the invasion of invasive alien species, new cement or glass constructions, which do not favor nesting, insecticides, etc. In rural areas, decline is minor, although it also occurs and is associated with agrarian intensification, the abusive use of pesticides or widespread depopulation. One of the sparrows that lives in rural areas, is the sparrow miller, the one of more than people, to understand us. It is not, therefore, an urban species but rural, small town, which rarely coincides with the common sparrow. Its plumage is similar and the song also, although more acute. He likes choral singing in a group.

The miller is the smallest and most delicate sparrow of the peninsular fauna and is an inhabitant of the wooded countryside, the groves and meadows, provided that in their vicinity they have open areas in which to obtain food. Although in the eighties of the last century the species experienced a certain demographic expansion, at present it seems that the competition with more prolific species and the agrarian intensification are causing a decrease in their numbers.

It can be said that the sparrow miller is the country version of the common sparrow. It highlights a square black spot on the white cheeks, as well as a white collar. On the neck it has a black bib, as well as a mask around the eyes. The wings and tail are brown with black lists and the belly is smooth gray. Its favorite habitat is fruit orchards near farms and hamlets, trying to stay somewhat away from homes and human beings.
